[I]QUOTE(S) TO NOTE:

Collectively, that could be the worst two periods I’ve seen since I got here, and that’s a lot of games. Hopefully that was a low point for us. We are leaving it to the leadership of this team to rally the troops. It is not about X’s and O’s right now. We are not competing at a level we need to. We are getting crushed by Edmonton in our building and that is embarrassing.

— Assistant Coach Ulf Samuelsson on sucking vs. the Edmonton Oilers... it wasn't the low point... they continued to suck

Would like to see Girardi and Staal be more physical and smarter around their net. If Staal is not going to tie opposing player up and clear the slot, there is nobody that is writing him a big ass long term contract. Girardi as a carryover form the playoffs again is positively dangerous in front of his own net. You have arguably the best goalie in the world behind you; if he sees it he will stop it. But not if you tip shots or block his view.

Updated defensive pairings, looks like Staal/Girardi are going to top pair, with Moore and Boyle as 2nd pair.

Hope our intent is not to put our 4th line on the ice every time Crosby is out there. We got caught in a change trying to do that earlier and almost got burned. Just seems like that would be a huge mismatch.

He's a big guy and it's just not a big part of his game. His biggest advantage in a game situation is his release and accuracy. In the shootout though since the goalie is so well set, he doesn't have much else to go by except maybe that Forsberg type move he sometimes tries.

Sucks to lose like that but it was the right call and man was it fun to watch.

I lost all respect for Crosby after this game though. I've never seen more disgraceful behavior to referees in my entire life, and I referee men's soccer. They're not as bad as Crosby was tonight. That guys was in the referee's faces, banging his stick on the glass, hacking, grabbing, speaking with the officials for minutes after the teams went into the locker room. It should be embarrassing. This is one of the best players to ever play. He hasn't scored in a few games so he throws a tantrum at the referees? Unbelievable. Absolutely should have been given a penalty but worse is that the kid should be embarrassed.

That hit by Malkin was fucking huge too. Hate to see G get plowed but that was a huge, clean hit by a type of player I wish would do that more in hockey. Rangers had a good response too.

Even in losing I was happy with how they played. Really felt like a playoff game. In the playoffs, without a shoutout, I think we couldve won that game (well, obviously) and it was encouraging to see them play an up tempo game against a team like the Penguins and stick wih them.

You also had CIndy bowl over Hank in the crease, in front of the ref, and no call, Fleury playing the puck outside the trapezoid. They called nonsense on the Rangers, and pretty much put the whistle away once the second started for Pitt. There were a couple of hooks, at one point a Pit player had his stick through Kreiders arm and across his back and no call, in front of a ref. This was as bad as the last Pitt game where the ref said no goal because the goalie couldn't do his job, and no one from the rages even touched him before the puck entered the crease.

I just think it's over the top that when we lose there always has to be this conspiracy theory. We lost. Too bad. Move on. Calls will be missed in any game. Should Crosby have gotten called? In one of those three cases, it's beyond conspiracy theory. Conspiracy theories always lack evidence. It's why people buy into them, because they think there is some nefarious work at play. In Crosby's case, there's actual concrete evidence in games that he does not get called for penalties most players do, and that his bitching and working of referees (an issue for years) influences games in favor of the Penguins.

Not that I think we lost because of it, but it's clearly not just a conspiracy theory.

It's been an issue, but I think it's blown out of proportion. I don't think Bettman and league are telling officials to not make calls on Crosby because he's their "golden boy." Fuckin' losers. There is no conspiracy. The call was correct, but it is incompetence to not keep the teams on the ice until the goal/nongoal is reviewed.

What is clear is the NHL does sometimes play favorites. Crosby, despite being one of the 2 most-talented players in the world, acts like a sugared up 6 year old denied another cookie and is indulged rather than penalized. To a lesser but still obvious extent, PK Subban gets some of the same treatment, as do the Habs as a team. Wonder if Milan Lucic might be suspended as often as say John Moore or Matt Cooke if he played for a team that did not feature NHL VP COlin Campbell's son.

But every time I watch a Bruins game(and that's not only vs. the Rangers), looks like Lucic, and also Marchand and Chara are doing things that are worthy of 5 minutes or more several times a game. The attitude is like the Patriots or Seahawks; you cannot expect the refs to call holding or PI every down. They're daring the refs to call it straight . And plus Greg's dad has their backs in the NHL office. Before Greg came to the Boston, recall Campbell was caught openly disparaging then Bruins' center Marc Savard as a whiner despite the fact that concussions eventually ended his career.

Not to the extent Crosby does, or has. The only two players who I can recall from recent memory who spent the amount of times jawing and working refs the way Crosby does are Lemieux and Gretzky.

The occasional complaint does not equate to the level of groaning Crosby produces game-to-game.

Working the refs is perfectly acceptable to me. It's all part of the nuance in sport. It works both ways, eventually a ref will get pissed and ignore him in a situation that has some actual merit.

All the nuance that makes humans humans is and should be found in a game and that to me is great.

All I know is that goal/non goal screwed with live feeds (non video) online. First my Gamecenter live feed showed the Rangers win 3-2. Click on the video to start watching the shoot out and it showed the Pens win 3-2.

Then on the espn app.......

On the initial replay after the game, I did NOT see a double-hit. I saw the goal NOT go in and then it looked like the goalie knocked it in moving backwards. I was so pissed off I went out before watching more replays or saving the HD feed and got a Dunkin Donuts.

Can anybody confirm -- it WAS the right call ? Papers seemed to think so, so did the announcers, but I did not see Boyle hit it twice. :wtf:

Maybe and maybe not. Many of us said the same thing last season and then Lundqvist became one of the biggest reasons the Rangers got as far as they did. He's bad right now, but most of the team has been bad as well. I think he'll get his shit together and as will the rest of the team. It sucks to have $8.5M invested in one player, but I have more faith in Lundqvist than I would in many other goaltenders. Put someone else in net for us and we'd be banging our heads even more.

It would be stupid if I came on here and said Hank is not a good goaltender. My point was to state that he is, IMO, on the decline, and at the beginning of a long term contract. I do think the will have stretches where he looks back to form, but not consistently.

He played well in the playoffs last year, but let's not forget that he threw us some stinkers as well.

While a guy like Quick is not going to give you as much regular season consistency, he does raise his game to another level in the playoffs.

Hank is still a really good goaltender, but that price tag is going to seem very expensive in the coming years.

You just described 90% of contracts signed in UFA.

Quick was horrendous at times in the post season last year. They were on the brink of getting swept in the first round partially because they gave up, 6, 7 and 4 goals in the first 3 games against San Jose.

Quick was also playing with a wrist injury, IIRC.

Hank has been streaky his entire career. He's just as good as he's ever been.
