The only change Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault will make tonight will be on defense, where Matt Hunwick will replace Michael Kostka. Hunwick appeared in both of the team's games over the past weekend against Columbus and Toronto, and saw his ice time rise to 18:48 Sunday against the Maple Leafs.

I hope Kostka plays and has a great game. As much as his bonehead plays angered me on Tuesday I did feel for the guy. I'd like to see him get a good game in, make some good plays...and then never see the ice again lol.

Glass, yet again, killing the 4th line in terms of momentum and possession. Doesn't hold the puck. Just chips it to the opponents or to no-mans land. Especially against a team like Carolina that doesn't have many bruisers, Fast should be on that line to make it an actual hockey line. He's not a hockey player, just a "new age" enforcer.

Can't pull that shit with the team playing like it is. This is the NHL and you're a 19-year old kid trying to keep his roster spot. I want him to succeed as much as everyone else but he has to play an NHL game to stay on this roster once Stepan is back.

We really need Stepan back to solidify the lines. Also, despite his deficiencies he's probably our best defensive forward and definitely our best center.

I know Richards sucked balls last season for the most part, but losing him and Boyle must have had some kind of effect in the locker room. Not that McDonagh won't be a good captain, but he's still young and probably not that vocal.

Agree, after the shuffle they played great in position hockey and rotated offensively while still playing D. What concerns me though is it was a shortened bench so we aren't deep.

I think Miller with Malone and Glass isn't *too bad* of a fourth line.

Nash and Stempniak were our best players on ice today

Hayes played a hell of a game too

Wasn't Malone moved up with Zuccs and Krieder in the beginning of the third? Though I don't think he saw much action end of third.

Maybe, but it was largely Kreider Brassard MZA

Yeah was just coming to correct. After coffee, recalled correctly Malone in third with Brassard and Zuc.

No worries compadre.

PS: Did anyone pick up what this year's victory song was? Each year this squad picks a new victory song (with previous entries being Viva La Vida, Good Feeling and Wake Me Up) - but I had trouble hearing it after this first home win.

I'd be stunned if he played more than 10 minutes last night. Don't remember seeing him much in the 3rd either.

He was centering Nash an St Louis and was really strong on the puck down low

Yeah, Hayes was moved to the top line. Duclair, Malone, and Glass were benched.

He had 16 shifts, and 11:40 of ice. 0 shots on goal. Heard his name once when he tossed the sauce cross ice when he pulled up inside the blue line. As Pete has said, plays die on his stick.

As long as you don't hear his name because of a mistake, it's progress. He's got 5 games of NHL experience.

I know Hayes has minimal NHL experience, but I definitely have higher expectations for him than Duclair as he's a whole 3 years older. I was hoping he would be ready, but it looks like he needs some AHL time. And he'll get that once Stepan returns

That's fine. But progress isn't equivalent to "a hell of a game"

Lol, certainly not. Didn't mean to imply he had a hell of a game. I would like to see him get a few more looks with Nash and MSL though. But as far as plays dying on his stick... I think that's a confidence thing. He's gotta trust that he can make a play at the net, hopefully he gets there.

I guess AV saw it differently, since he got moved up.

He also benched 3 guys. He might have let you play center at that point.

Pete

Since Malone got benched, maybe we can stop the love-fest with him now? i don't even hate the guy, but acting like he's going to have an impact on the game by replacing Tanner Glass just isn't realistic, and it gets less realistic when Stepan gets back if Stempniak keeps his play up.

I'm just pointing out what AV seems be feeling. He was on the ice in the final minute of a 1 goal game. He must like what he sees with him.

That's a trend I was looking to see what would follow too. I didn't notice what it was last night but I do remember hearing Wake Me Up after one of the pre season wins.

Regarding the Hayes conversation. I love that AV slotted him between Nash and MSL. Let the kid get the big minutes with the top line and let them help him along. He made a nice play towards the end of the 3rd almost resulted in a wrap around goal. One thing I don't recall is how he did on faceoffs. Not that the Rangers were any good as a whole anyways when it came to draws.

Or there's isn't much anyone is producing and he's grasping at straws hoping for something. Hayes hasn't been noticeable IMO

He put him there earlier, and benched 3 guys. He took his shift. Big deal. Not that it matters much, but it was a tie game. Did he touch the ice in ot? There was nothing good going on in that game, 3 guys were benched. He was moved up by default, and because he didn't suck. Not because he was spectacular. If Stepan wasn't hurt, do you think he would be here at all right now?

Yeah he would be here if Stepan wasn't hurt because he's one of our only three centers right now. They don't want MSL at center.

He deserved to be on that top line he's looking more comfortable on the ice. And yes he would be our third line center if Stepan was here. Hayes is showing a lot more than miller at this point.

Well AV doesn't appear to like Miller, but he's going to get another chance. He might get sent down before Hayes, but neither of them is a lock to stay when Stepan comes back.

Hayes is getting more opportunity because AV doesn't like Miller.

My only issue with miller is that he seems to lose every puck battle. Any time he gets the puck along the boards you might as well start skating back because the opposition is about to get it. He just looks like a boy among men out there half the time.

I dunno maybe I just noticed it a few times and it's the only time I really ever notice him. Still not ready to give up on him though.

Maybe it's the fanboy of wanting him to do well, but I just didn't see Miller doing THAT badly to warrant getting sat in the stands.

That's ultimately how I felt. If you're giving the guy a legitimate shot, why shut him down after 3 games? The short and the long of it is that soon Stepan will be back, MSL will not be at center and we need to find one more center to go through the season with. This early part of the season we should be giving legitimate candidates as much time as possible to seize that opportunity. If it's between Hayes and Miller, then play them both and live with the downside now so we can benefit down the road.

I'm not buying the "AV doesn't like Miller" excuse.

Has Miller been as horrible as some fans say? Of course not.

But be honest. Has he done anything in the few regular season games to help his cause?

He's done almost nothing but fumble passes on his tape and turn the puck over. He's playing nervous / without confidence. He has the skill. But he needs the focus and consistent intensity level. He's had a few nice shifts amid mostly lackluster efforts.

Hayes has done much more to stay and has actually created some really nice plays.

I like Miller, but since Hayes has outplayed him, it makes more sense to send him down where he can play 20+ minutes a night on a first line, PP, etc instead of being a healthy scratch at the NHL level or playing 8 ES minutes a night. They're much more comfortable doing that with Chris Mueller since he isn't part of the long-term plans and there's no concern of stagnating his development by doing so like there is with JT Miller. I don't get what the big deal is. This was the right move. Where is this "AV doesn't like JT Miller" excuse coming from? Is there anything to back this up?

This is what I see as well. I just don't see an NHL-ready player there. He's kind of ready, but kind of not. It's like the situation Greg Moore was in with the Rangers years ago. Every time he was called up, he did nothing and was sent down again, only to be a really effective AHL-level player. Miller has a much higher ceiling, clearly, but he's not quite there yet, and for whatever the reason, just isn't panning out with this roster right now.

As to the AV doesn't like Miller thing, I think that's just conjecture stemming from the "he has to learn to be a pro" stuff from last season.
