[I]QUOTE TO NOTE:

As a group, you can’t point fingers at anybody in particular
If there’s a team loss, this is one of them. From the heads on down, we didn’t perform well,
we didn’t execute well with or without the puck, and that’s why we got the result we got tonight.

— [Coach] Alain Vigneault on Sunday's home opener loss to the Maple Leafs

This will be a great test for this team to see what they're made of early. I don't really care if we win or lose this game - so long as the complete effort is there on both ends of the ice for the whole game. Isles games are always a crapshoot but this team is about to have its mettle tested for the first time this season.

Trying to jump start Brassard maybe, he's been awful. It's amazing how much that line misses Pouliot

seen some good things so far and some bad things. horrendous start last year and still made the finals. point is its a long way to go boys. this could take a bit to get going here. i think we need some patience.

We just need to adjust and get on the same page. Speed creates but also destroys. Its going to take a little bit of time before everything comes full circle and we're able to play the game we want to play. No worries! This is a headstrong group that will pull together. Win or loss, we just need to keep trying to put the pieces together. LGR!!

This is like the Stanley Cup Finals to Islander fans. They always treat these October games against us like they're Game 7's, now more than ever because of their offseason additions and the fact were basically a measuring stick to other teams now.

I don't think Dan Boyle will help more than marginally in our own end either.

10-14-2014, 11:00 PM
Just got back from the game, some thoughts:

Lundqvist was solid through two periods, and you couldn't really blame him for the third period as the Isles trounced on giveaways and screens and just got the puck by him. He could've helped more but he can't shoulder all of the blame.

Duclair doesn't know how to play NHL defense, and it caused a few issues. IMO he gets sent back once Stepan is healthy and we have a legit top-9.

Hayes actually impressed me a little, but he needs to shoot the puck more. He was open a few times and opted for passes which got deflected.

Kostka...ugh. What a shitty giveaway. But J.Moore has gotten better with every game IMO and I think he played halfway decent tonight. Maybe he just had some opening jitters and has settled down.

I liked Stempniak and Malone in the lineup. Not gamebreakers but solid players who can contribute to this team.

Tanner Glass fucking sucks. He's a waste out there. For all the toughness and grit he brings, he can't handle the puck for shit and always chips it up the ice to the opponent or gives it away. The fourth line should be Malone-D.Moore-Fast. Glass shouldn't be in the top-12.

I think we miss Brian Boyle a lot more than we give him credit for. I know he wanted an expanded role (and with the Stepan injury he would've had it to start), but his penalty killing was key for us and it just hasn't been up to par with blocking shots and being in the lanes.

I don't like that they went away from Staal - Klein so quickly. I think with veteran D pairs, you have to give them a little time to work out kinks. If at $2.9M Klein really can't give you anything more than stable 3rd pair duty, then he's got to go, too. It's a waste of resources. But we won't know that until he gets a legitimate shot there.

If he can't slot up for us, then package him with an odd forward out for a legit 3/4 defender making similar money and we'll figure out the D pairs when Boyle comes back.

Kostka should be on waivers by noon today and Hunwick is fine for spot duty as a 7th, but he can't be a regular defender for over a month.

The old saying, you can't win the Cup in October, but you can lose it is starting to look like a possibility for us.

No panic here. I actually have been focusing on the positives. This team has a ton of speed, and loves to shoot. On top of that, Nash looks like a man on a mission.

Listen, no one likes losing. Players, fans. No one. They're in a rut, but I think they're gonna be just fine. Losing the way we've lost is never fun, but again, I think this is gonna wind up being a very good, very deep hockey team. Right now, at present moment, our biggest strength is maybe our biggest weakness (with that being our defense). And it's just a matter of time until that all comes together.

It's 4 games in. All these games count, so I'm not discrediting them by any means. But it is very early for a very good team IMO. I think they're gonna be just fine. I don't think any big-time knee jerk reactions are needed at the moment.

Trust me, I HATE losing to the islanders, but there were more positives to take out of this game than negatives. We lost simply because Kostka made two nightmare giveaways in our own zone. The game spiraled out of control after that. Other than that, we dominated this game and our offense looks really dangerous. Even the fourth line with Malone is dangerous. Nash is also completely on fire. I'm not worried, because this team will clean up their mistakes and they're showing the stuff that you can't fix or teach.

The center position is extremely important when it comes to defense.

Yes our defensemen have ALL sucked but support from the center position plays a large part of that as well. Missing stepan and then having a non-natural center getting a lot of minutes in st. louis, along with a rookie centerman in Miller definitely kills the team as well. With Hank not being elite at the moment its a perfect shit-storm right now.

Miller didn't even play last night. And while St. Louis absolutely sucks on the defensive end of the center position, IMO Stepan isn't a defensive revelation and doesn't make us that much better. It starts with the defensemen and having Kostka/Klein playing the right side on the 2nd pair is killing us. Boyle is steadier as far as puck possession and breaking out goes but the jury is out after only one game on the defensive side. It's a glaring hole we failed to address when letting Stralman walk.

With more competitive teams in L.I./Brooklyn, Tampa and New Jersey — even before this season-starting shitshow 2.0 (SSS 2.0) —*I \ expected the Rangers to be in a battle for a playoff spot before this season began. Now I'm more resigned to that. Buckle up for a long season. No guarantees on post-season action unless they earn it.

Are the forwards coming back in proper puck support in the defensive zone -- I've seen a couple of skip ups but haven't watched it closely enough to know if that's part of the problem.

Some folks in other forums are talking about our breakout being "predictable" and other teams making the adjustment to pressure that breakout pass and the man receiving it.

Stralman -- I always wonder when we sign a handful of players whether letting aplyer who fit in well was a false economy. Remind me how much did he sign for again? I was a lot a lot a lot a lot right?

I'm not going to call him a revelation, but Stepan is excellent in his own end. Getting 20 minutes a night out of a good defensive center, rather than MSL, will make a difference.

I think the problem with Miller is that his mental lapses show up a lot more than the good things he does. So he might make three good plays with the puck and then lose his man in front, but the puck goes in and that's all we remember from the game.

Agreed that its difficult to get a read on him, but I just think he needs time to get used to being a pro, so to speak.

I agree with this, but that's hard to do at this time of the year, where lines are influx looking for successful combinations.

Miller hasn't helped his cause in this, though. When you've got opportunities as a young player, you've got to use them to get noticed. And when that earns you more time, you've got to keep getting noticed. Miller has had a few flashes of what he could be, but he's also mixed in a similar number of glaring mistakes. And then, the majority of the time, he's just there doing the right things. He'll control the puck, make the right play but for what ever reason it's not resulting in the amount of production it should. And that's a problem for a young player that's only average defensively.
