[I]QUOTE TO NOTE:

There were a lot of ‘50-50’ pucks that they got to.
Was it that they were a little quicker than we were, or that they wanted it more?
I’m not exactly sure on that yet.

I don't understand how we don't have a fit for Malone when we've decided to dress Fast on the 4th line.

He's supposed to forecheck and play well defensively. I can't see how he hasn't done either of the two. His offense is going to be limited with limited chances and minutes. I don't know what you're expecting from him.

I get this and I do agree that he has essentially "done his job" - and that's fine. He's a serviceable fourth liner, nothing more, nothing yet; at least not at this point. Malone on the other hand can do all of that, and then add a different dimension to the club. He may not be as young or as quick, but he has shown a propensity for scoring goals and brings both the size and toughness that this squad currently lacks. Moreover he can be placed firmly in the crease on the powerplay should the likes of Nash or Kreider find themselves in the box.

I'm not saying that Fast has been bad, not at all - but I feel that Malone would simply offer more. Obviously though, I could be wrong.

Toronto's defense is a mess. They have a decent amount of scoring talent to offset the imbalance, but it's fairly top loaded and can be shut down if paid attention to.

Maintaining pressure in the offensive zone is paramount, as Toronto are prone to turnovers when engaged for lengthy periods of time.

I don't know about that. Fast has been pretty important on the penalty kill and I don't think you'd see Malone there. Malone might bring more physicality, but I don't know if he'd really make that much of a difference on that fourth line. I also don't know if he'd even see powerplay time. Kreider is in front of the net on the second unit and Nash seems to be gravitating to the front on the first unit. He's not making it ahead of either of them.

I said "should the likes of Nash or Kreider find themselves in the box" - so that's bunk.

But like I said about my evaluation of Malone-Fast, it's all my opinion.

That was merely an added bonus. My point was that I'd prefer to have Malone with Moore and Glass than Fast. That's just me. He can play with skilled players, answer the bell, be a potential PP threat, bang bodies, and he adds a veteran presence to our bottom 6. I'd take all that over decent defensive play and some speed (which we already have in spades).

Again though, I could very well be wrong.

I don't know if I'd call Fast's defensive play decent. He's done quite well in that regard and made some nice plays last night. I don't know if a veteran presence is necessarily needed with Stempniak, Moore and somewhat Glass in the bottom six. As you said, it's your opinion, but I don't know how many of things you're advocating for Malone with will actually make that much of a difference with limited play.
