We need a RD, so it won't be Hunwick. It will either be Thor or Undertaker.

Should be interesting to see reciprocal move. Personally, I would like to see youth over journeyman garbage.

I figured they'd just let Hunwick play but if they want a RD...McIlrath over Kostka

What about Allen?

He's a LD and he's way overhyped at this point. His play came crashing down to Earth toward the end of the season in the AHL last year and he didn't have a very good camp. Would be surprised to see him called up.

TwoMinutesForNothing
10-09-2014, 11:16 PM
Eh, it's probably better off this way as long as he stays in shape. His old ass will be fresher for the playoffs now.

I rather have it happen now than later but still, at least give me some time to get used to having him on the back end of the PP.

Well he's gone for over a month worth of hockey, nothing to do now. Hope the rangers can fill someone on the back end for the PP and that it improves.

Good time to try out McIlrath for a good look. Little frightened about the idea of him playing with Moore but I guess we'll see the top 4 (including Klein) get more minutes now.

Did his gloves have the extra padding on it?

This might be tougher to handle than Stepan's injury. Not that Boyle has been anything spectacular up until now (pre-season + this game), but a veteran guy who can calm down a play will be missed.

Hunwick played fine on the right side in the preseason, but that was when he was paired with McDonagh. We can't even really switch McDonagh to the right side to compensate for it because that leaves Girardi out to dry. And I don't want a 3rd pairing of J. Moore and Hunwick. It might actually be McIlrath time in New York. Or they can put Hunwick on the right side with Staal. I wouldn't be super opposed to keeping Klein with Moore and just replacing man for man.

Hunwick will play with Staal. I don't see the problem.

If you move Klein up with Staal you can ride the top four pretty hard

Not AV's style and that tires out the top-4 come April. Not ideal.

ill take the glass half full approach.

injury is better early in the season.

a 38 year old guy missing a month of hockey up front might just be a good thing down the road.

we all joke on this board about AV not liking to play the kids but this gives a young guy an opportunity which there's never anything wrong with in my eyes.

This could be a good thing. IF they DO bring McIlrath in, it will give us a real good look at his game. Let's see if the big boy can hang with the big men.

It's the rotting corpse of Dan Boyle we're missing, not an actually good NHL defenceman. We're fine.

McD/McI?

That leaves Staal-Klein and Moore-Girardi.

That third pairing has me somewhat uncomfortable, but I can live with that. Figure you shift down to 5 D in the third and reunite the McG pair.

I didn't like McI eating Boyle's minutes...Don't want him eating G's either.

If they had a steadier 3rd pairing guy, that's how you break McI in. Not with Moore. Maybe go 2 right shots with Klein and McI and go Moore/Staal? But neither of them can play the off side, either.

I think in reality we see something like:

McD - G
Staal - Klein
Moore - Kostka
Hunwick

And if Moore has a few more games like last night he sits for Hunwick who looked like a serviceable 3rd pair with Kostka in preseason.

I had high hopes this summer for him

As Pete said, with a responsible veteran in that spot Mcilrarh might have received
a few games

I was never really for or against Diaz, but for as good of a shot he supposedly had, I can't help but remember a lot of shanked one time attempts.

Vigneault said defenseman Dan Boyle (broken hand) has been skating for four or five days, and doing everything but shooting and passing. He broke the hand in the second period of the season-opener on Oct. 9 and was expected to miss four-to-six weeks.

Seriously, after gratuitously taking the piss out of this, I'm really hoping this was just a journalistic lapse and the writer meant "begun skating [with the team]"
That's what I'm hoping — and who knows, maybe it was even almost impossible for him to lace up the boots without damaging his hand — that the guy makes a good recovery, because it looks like we could use some help.

You can't skate with a broken hand. If you fall, you can injure it further.

It's np, he's probably been spinning the whole time and done exercises that are safe to keep his cardio up. This is a seasoned vet, he knows what it takes.

Ryan McDonagh, the captain and top defenseman, is still two to three weeks from returning from a shoulder injury, and Dan Boyle, the veteran defenseman who broke his hand in the season opener, is apparently not quite ready to return to action.

“It’s pretty hard to be pain-free in this league,” Boyle said. “First and foremost, we’ve got to make sure we don’t re-break it. I don’t want to cause the team some mistakes.”

Boyle, perhaps more than other guys, will be useless if he's not completely healthy. If he can't shoot and pass, he's worthless. Just get him healthy.
