Sweet. St. Louis and Stepan added as alternates as well. Nice to see them both get letters.

Two straight for me lol just going to buy a C and find a place to get it stitched on. When is the last time a team had a captain and 4 A's?

Congrats! Guess we'll have alternating alternate captains.

First and foremost, congrats to McD. He's gonna wear that C for a damn long time.

There's one too many As, but it's not like you can't give MSL an A. He's a first ballot Hall-of-Famer. You're not ripping anything off Staal or Girardi's chest and you need someone to pass the torch to when MSL is gone, so I'm not exactly miffed about Stepan.

I have to admit though - I saw this picture and went "Oh, they called in one of the alumni to hang with ...wait, that's MSL."

I don't think they'll all wear letters for every game.

Best thing about this is the longevity, IMO. Not since Mess have we had a captain that has a potential staying power of a decade or longer. McDonagh should be that guy, and he absolutely deserves it. The next great Rangers defenseman in our history is already here gents.

Agreed.
25 years old.
And outside of Lundy, can't think of a better player developed by the Rangers in the last 30 years, (I'm thinking Leetch).

I was thinking the same thing. Didn't realize you could even have that many A's, Jesus.

You can actually name as many as you like. You just can't have them actually wear them. Only three letters can be worn in any game. My guess is they'll split it this season by home/away. The Panthers actually just did this same thing, naming Willie Mitchell captain, and Dave Bolland, Brian Campbell, Derek MacKenzie and Scottie Upshall all Alternates.

I view it as a testament of strength, honestly. It goes to show the depth of leadership in the organization, with guys like Stepan and Girardi "new" to roles that Staal and especially St. Louis have held for years. It's a good mix.

Congrats McDonagh.

No clue why Stepan gets an "A"....I'll stop there as to not derail the thread

First, Congrats to McD. He should make for a fine Captain.

I loved this sequence of events from last night after the announcement though:

:tweet: Larry Brooks ‏@NYP_Brooksie Well this is strange. Rangers decide to announce McDonagh's appointment as captain in press release at 8:30 PM.

:tweet: Steve Zipay ‏@stevezipay McDonagh announcement was made at private team dinner tonight...

So, Larry, we're terribly sorry that the Rangers decided that the naming of their new captain was important enough to gather the entire team around in celebration instead of as a post practice after thought so that you could easily get a story into the morning edition without having to stay up past your bed time. Next time I'm sure they will remember that it's really all about you.

Rangers had 4 A's in 1994. Larmer, Lowe, Graves, Leetch. 2 were home A's, and the other 2 were road A's

And in homage to our new Captain, the following is one of my favorite all-time Rangers related sentances printed in a sports story...

JUNE 30th, 2009
Defenseman Ryan McDonagh had been acquired by the New York Rangers from the Montreal Canadiens, along with Chris Higgins, Pavel Valentenko and Doug Janik in exchange for Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt, and Mike Busto

I don't think much of their front office thought that was the case. Certainly Gordie Clark didn't.

I thought McD was considered a highly touted prospect for the Habs, no?

That, I'm not sure of, but I do remember an interview where Clark said that there were prospects that you have your eye on who get drafted by other teams. Some of them, you keep following and try to pry away. McD was one of those types.

http://www.lockerpulse.com/News/Read-Pierre-McGuire-on-the-day-the-Rangers-traded-for-Ryan-McDonagh-S10845834/

On May 19th, Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 Radio and was asked about the day the Rangers acquired Ryan McDonagh from the Montreal Canadiens. Pierre said, “one of the silliest trades that ever took place. I was sitting in the lobby of the Westin hotel about to go on Montreal radio and I let them have it on the radio, it was just such a silly trade. It just shows you that there are certain people, not all because I know some people who were really upset about the deal, there were certain people who didn’t do enough work and evaluate the prospect properly. The Rangers were just salivating and licking their lips. The day before the deal happened one of the Rangers scouts game me a call and said ‘we got a chance to get Ryan McDonagh.’

Have the Hab's ever really come out and said why they thought so little of him? I've seen things written that not being a French speaker had something to do with it and saw one article that went so far to say that they thought very little of him within their org.

I don't know if they ever spoke specifically to McDonagh at the time, but Gainey was banking on signing Brian Gionta a day or two later to re-connect Gomez and Gionta together. They also signed Cammalleri that summer.

IIRC there was an issue with him wanting to stay in school, they wanted him to sign, they didn't think they could get him to, though.
