Alain Vigneault received a text message Wednesday night from veteran Rangers right wing Martin St. Louis, hours after top center Derek Stepan had broken his left leg during training camp.

“If you need me in the middle, I’m ready,” St. Louis wrote, knowing Stepan will be out 4-6 weeks.

Vigneault isn’t prepared to make such drastic a change yet, though, to address his lack of depth at center.

I appreciate his willingness to help the team however he can, but man, a career wing who has never played center stepping into the number one center position? I think I'd sooner take my chances rolling the dice with Miller at 2C first.

Didn't we talk about this somewhere else already? Getting smaller down the middle is NOT the answer.

No thanks, unless the team comes out 0-6 or some shit and a change is necessitated

this is what i'm inferring...
1) marty already knows him playing center isn't ideal.
2) maybe he wants to wear a letter and this is his way of stepping into a leadership role with NYR.

I think Marty is a lock for at a minimum an A as it is.

I think more accurately, it shows the kind of player Marty is. I don't think however him being in the center position is in any way ideal.

I mean he's a good setup man and solid defensively. Faceoffs and size matchups may be an issue.

I thought he came into the league as a center?
