Damn, seems like not to long ago our boys were battling it out for the Cup. Hopefully our players have grown from experience and defeat and will come out harder than before this season.

Coach Alain Vigneault said essentially the White team would dress against the Devils. That would be:
Chris Kreider-Kevin Hayes-Danny Kristo
Ryan Malone-Matthew Lombardi-Marty St. Louis
Carl Hagelin-J.T. Miller-Ryan Bourque
Tanner Glass-Chris Mueller-Jesper Fast
Marc Staal-Dan Boyle
John Moore-Michael Kostka
Steven Kampfer, plus one other defenseman

Henrik Lundqvist is expected to start. Jason Missiaen backed up Lundqvist for White in today’s scrimmage but it wouldn’t be surprising if either Cam Talbot or Cedric Desjardins dressed against the Devils.

How? He's playing with two guys who play a very similar game to him.

He's probably going to end up on the third line this year anyway, on the wing of whoever makes the team as the third line center (Lombardi, Hayes, Miller, Lindberg) and probably Ryan Malone on the other side.

If I'm trying to make a team, I'd rather be playing with Kreider and Kristo than Hags and Bourque. It's not a huge difference really, but I'd think that, if he and Hayes are both in competition for that third C spot, this would give Hayes a little extra advantage.

My POV is, Miller is likely to be playing with Hagelin on the 3rd line, so it's more important for him to show that he can work with Hagelin than with Kreider.

This. Plus Krieder has shown to be a bit of a slow starter. This might be a way to fire him up early in camp by pairing him with an old teammate from college.

OK, but again, he's probably going to end up on the third line this year anyway (assuming he makes the team) with Hagelin and someone like Malone or Stempniak anyway.

Isn't he better off playing with guys he's probably going to start the year with anyway?

But wouldn't we then say the same for Hayes? He's not going to be playing with Kreider and he'll probably only be on a line with Kristo if they're both in Hartford.

Maybe AV will bounce the two of them around, who knows.

Scott Clemmensen will play first half of game tonight. Keith Kinkaid will play second half.

Kinkaid is a Long Island kid, played for Union and was solid in the AHL last year. Him and Clemmensen are battling for the backup role.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Boyle can do for us from the point on the power play. He can still shoot the puck thats for sure. Up front I liked what I saw from JT Miller. Hayes showed some promise, he could be a good player down the road for us. Fast's goal was hilarious. Ryan Malone was probably our best player tonight IMO.

On the lighter side as the team came out for warmups tonight Hayes comes flying out the door and takes like 2 strides before he trips on the pile of pucks on the ice and eats it. Absolutely hilarious.

Kreider is a lot like Nash, not necessarily in their style of play, but in the fact that their skill set really doesn't depend on having good players around them all that much. They create their own chances and don't really need an elite setup man to help them score.

Pete
09-23-2014, 09:33 AM

The goal last night was basically an individual play. Someone just threw it out of the zone but then Kreider won the stick battle for the puck and then used his size and speed to get the shot off. It's not like he got set up for a great one-timer where he was wide open or anything like that. He's able to beat guys without having to dangle them...there isn't really much a defender can do once Kreider gets shoulder-to-shoulder with them.

EdMc28
09-23-2014, 10:34 AM
I really hope they use the bank pass or try to hit Kreider with the stretch pass as often as possible this season. If he can get half a step on a defender in the neutral zone he's gone.

Malone was a nice surprise to see him playing like that again, looked nothing like he did last year. I also thought Kreider looked good, and was kind of impressed with Hayes. He could be a good player moving forward. I thought Miller had some good points and some bad ones. Hopefully it was just some rust and he can be more consistent in the game. All in al, it wasn't a bad display by them. Its preseason, so Im not gonna get to upset until the full team starts playing together.

Future
09-23-2014, 11:49 AM
Kreider needs to be "sprung" like he was last night....
My point is that pretty much anyone can do that. It's not like it was a perfect lob pass that hit him in stride...he waited for the puck, lifted the stick of the defender, gained control, and then used his size/speed to get the shot off. He doesn't need to be sprung in the same way as like Hagelin, who purely uses speed.

It's kind of like comparing DeSean Jackson to Brandon Marhsall. Jackson needs someone to throw him open so he can just run by a guy and catch it whereas Marshall can simply go up and get it. That means Marshall will be good with anybody throwing him the ball whereas Jackson needs a good QB to get it there. I think you could say pretty much the same thing about Hags and Kreider.

I don't watch football.

It's easy to say "anyone can do it", but realistically, that's just not the case.

My point is, Nash will pick the puck up and do it all himself. Kreider simply isn't going to do that —*he's not going end to end, he doesn't have Nash's reach or 1 on 1 ability. If he gets a step, of course, he's gone. I just don't think it's accurate to say that he doesn't need anyone to get him the puck. I don't think Nash needs to be fed, but Kreider does.

The pass came from Kristo, who just threw it out of the zone, which tells me that pretty much anybody can spring Kreider...unless Kristo is some great passer and I'm not aware of it. Kreider can go the length of the ice just b/c of his speed, it's just a lot different than how Nash does it...but I don't think he needs elite linemates getting him the puck, so in that sense, he and Nash are the same.

I guess we'll just agree to disagree. Kreider got a good bounce over a guy's stick, but his speed and shot did the rest. The less Kreider has the puck on his stick, the better.

Making an observation on Kreider can do it with anyone just because of 1 play in the first preseason is a stretch IMO.

Look at how almost all of his goals were scored last season and the post season before. Either a few feet from the net or someone gives him a pass as he's streaking towards the net

He is definitely not a puck possession player. He's about as north-south as you can get

Miller looked good on the offensive side of the puck but made one bad giveaway up the middle and a bad cover playing D on a rush. Glad that defensive is a coachable aspect, because he looks much more confident and creative attacking and you can't teach that.

Other thoughts were that Hayes didn't stand out, Hunwick is very mobile and I'd give him a look to be the 7th guy, and Lombardi did absolutely nothing for me. Excited to see everyone else play in the next few games.
