Zuke takes a cap friendly deal and works on an extension for when the cap goes up.

If we get Zook at 3.5 and Kreider at 2.5 that leaves how much for Brass and Moore, like 7-8mil?

They negotiate mid-year, not at the end of next year. He can sign an extension on January 1st, 2015.

Yea. He said he'd rather go to Europe then play for any other NHL team.

I don't like this deal.
I'd rather see a bigger cap hit at a longer deal.

Speaks volumes of this kid though. Really does.

I would not be surprised if his next contract was already done. Gentleman's agreement on an increasing multiple year contract. This is year one. Long term cap hit will be a little higher but we get a friendly deal for this year. Good deal all around.

I think MSL will retire here. He pushed a ton of buttons that some of us have never and will never know in order to ensure he'd be here. I doubt it was for a year and 18 regular season games. This is a family thing. He'll take a bargain to stay like Shanahan did toward the end, though MSL has and likely will have more left in the tank than Shanahan did at that age. As long as he plays, he'll be a Ranger IMO.

Agreed. He wants to win a Cup I imagine more than anything. This team is capable of winning one with a little bit of luck.

MSL doesn't need money. If he can still play, I can see him signing one year deals full of bonuses to keep the cap hit low. There's no way he forces out to come for one amazing run, an additional season and then retire.

Maybe, but really, we don't know what his reasons for forcing his way out of Tampa were, our how he feels today.

But we should keep this thread about Zuke.

Can keep this on Zuke, but he did address it. Done with that.

I think Zuke gets his deal next year though. He took less and it shows how committed he is to the team.

He's going to get more money even if he puts up the exact same year as he did this past season. This is a total cap-friendly, sweet heart of a contract he's signing knowing the team needs to get Brassard paid and Kreider under contract (as well as John Moore). He'll work out his pay out mid-year and probably sign on January 1st.

Exactly. His number won't change drastically whether he signed now or JAN.

So much respect for Zuccarello, put the team first.
We all know he deserves more, and he will get it, and I hope he does.
Total team player, from his interviews seems so humble and just loves to play the game.

Like a lot of you here, I hope he gets singed for a long term contract.

We might even have a tad extra cash to play with now depending upon how the rest of the guys sign.

DO people still think Brassard and Zuc will cost 9mil combined?

To re-sign long-term? Absolutely. Zucc is gonna be near $4.5M, if not $5M on a long-term extension once he signs it. Brassard probably $4.9M to $5.5M.

BlairBettsBlocksEverything
07-23-2014, 09:36 AM
long term yeah, i just meant for this season. Seems like everyone was worried we'd have to shell out big bucks in the short term.

Phil in Absentia
07-23-2014, 10:07 AM
Because the idea was to re-sign both long-term this season. No one expected Zuccarello to take a short-term deal to re-sign as the cap rises going into next season.

Slobberknocker
07-23-2014, 11:39 AM
this is the greatest thing about sports. two years ago this guy is playing in Europe and doesn't have a clue whether he gets back to the NHL. Than he gets an opportunity and just gives it his best effort and has success. In the process he endears himself to his team mates, the fan base and now with this deal the management as well.

It's just a great testament about making the most of one's opportunities in life be it in the sports world or out.

Am I the only one concerned about it being a 1yr deal? I'd rather sign him for more money and more years than risk him putting up 65pts and asking for 5.5 mil per season.

Very short sighted deal, IMO.

Pete
07-23-2014, 12:36 PM
It's not short signted when you don't have the money to re-sing him for much more than that. What did you think you were getting him at if you wanted to purchase UFA years? Not $3.5, I'll tell you that.

i'd love to see some sather's or his agent's comments about this. could gain some more perspective.
