A few nights ago I watched the episode where Larry has his psychiatrist mug his ex wifes psych so he can play the hero to get his ex's psych to say good things about him to her, and suggest they get back together etc etc....it was funny but all the yelling was getting SO annoying.

When this show first came on, I never really watched it and i kind of had this poor opinion of it.
But after watching all of the reruns on PIX 11 I actually love the show. It really is like a Seinfeld show onkly without the audience applause and they add lib some of their stuff.

Phil in Absentia

LOL I love that. Jim makes the best faces.

Reminds me of comics who suffer from that approval syndrome I was talking about by having to say things like "you know what' I'm saying?" and "am I right?" after every punch line. Total lack of confidence. Same applies for the office. If the joke was that funny, you wouldn't need to awkwardly stare at the camera to force laughter because people are breaking the unwritten rule never to stare into it.

When they look into the camera, it's part of the joke. The entire show is a joke - including the documentary aspects of it.

I get that, but it's still tabboo.

Pete
06-08-2011, 09:40 AM
It's not taboo because the premise of the show is "These people are being recorded and they don't know what they're doing." And yes, it's dumb.

Phil in Absentia
06-08-2011, 09:44 AM
It's tabboo for television, dude. Can you even name me another show who utilizes that style of filming?

It being intentional doesn't make it any less tabboo.

I don't care enough to argue. I'll just say that Zack Morris looked at and talked to the camera all the time.

I know what everyone is saying how the humor is meant to be that way, but I can agree with Phil I also don't find the offices camera setting and the actors acting style that funny.
Sometimes I get a laugh, and its usually from weird looking dude in the glasses (forget his name) and the big bald guy with the lisp.

yes this is true. Sometimes I find it almost nauseating while other times funny. But a show like Seinfeld, no matter what mood I'm in I can always sit down and start laughing at something.

Pete
06-08-2011, 10:33 AM
Not the same. His was done in monologue/interview style, which is not tabboo.

There is no taboo when the point of the show is to intentionally violate the "rules of TV".

Phil in Absentia
06-08-2011, 10:41 AM
Yes, there is.

Intentional violations are still taboo, dude.

For example: polygamy is taboo in the US. You being intentionally polygamous, even to make fun of it, is still taboo, because it's still polygamy.

So Nashty

Same. Seinfeld has me in stitches no matter how many times I've seen an episode.

Bluephoria
06-08-2011, 11:48 AM
Phil, you are so wrong about this taboo shit. LOL

I know you always take things to extreme levels, especially against things you don't like, but come on man.

Edit: Ok, I read through the thread and see what your saying. But to point to this as a bad thing because you don't like the show is retarded. It's one of the characteristics of the show that make it unique and original. (And a fucking massive success)

I wouldn't call it taboo, but yes, it's not the norm.

Phil in Absentia
06-08-2011, 11:52 AM
How am I wrong? Taboo is taboo. It doesn't matter if it's done intentionally or not. It's done intentionally to "break the rules", but the rules still exist, so until they don't, it's still taboo. Logic.

Morphinity
06-08-2011, 11:57 AM
It's not a traditional comedy though. If, in a show like Seinfeld, they did stuff like this it would be taboo. But the premise of the show is that there is a documentary being done and the people of the office are schmucks.

Just because it's different doesn't mean it's "taboo".

On a side note, "taboo" is a stupid word, but a fun game to play.

Pete
06-08-2011, 12:03 PM
I don't think it's a reason to hate the show. The show itself sucks. To say "Show is insanely hilarious, but I don't watch it because they look at the camera" is weak.

Phil in Absentia
06-08-2011, 12:04 PM
Taboo: Adjective: Prohibited or restricted by custom.

Custom in television is not to look at the camera, regardless of whether ONE show is trying to change that or not. Until more and more shows take the same approach, it will continue to be taboo.

Phil in Absentia
06-08-2011, 12:05 PM
I don't think it's a reason to hate the show. The show itself sucks. To say "Show is insanely hilarious, but I don't watch it because they look at the camera" is weak.

1. Of course it's a reason to hate the show. I can hate it for whatever reason I like. Doesn't change the fact it's a reason.

2. I hate it because it isn't funny. The staring at the camera thing just pisses me off and makes me hate it more.

Morphinity
06-08-2011, 12:06 PM
Yeah, well that's another argument. If you don't think the show is funny, that's one thing, but the "looking into the camera" thing isn't really as apparent as you'd think.

Pete
06-08-2011, 12:06 PM
Wrong. Zack Morris looked at the camera. In Scrubs they look at the camera. In documentaries, they look at the camera. The Office is a spoof documentary.

Morphinity

Taboo: Adjective: Prohibited or restricted by custom.

Custom in television is not to look at the camera, regardless of whether ONE show is trying to change that or not. Until more and more shows take the same approach, it will continue to be taboo.

But custom in a documentary IS to look into the camera. The show is doing a mock documentary of an office situation. So it isn't taboo then.

Phil in Absentia
06-08-2011, 12:08 PM
Wrong. Zack Morris looked at the camera. In Scrubs they look at the camera. In documentaries, they look at the camera.

Yes, in monologue/interview style, as I've already noted, which is a style where it's acceptable. The Office is a scripted show where they utilize them staring into the camera during the "Reality" style interview segments, but the filming of the characters in the program itself is designed to be an "outsider" view, which is what makes them staring at the camera during that time taboo.

Where in Scrubs did they look at the camera? I can't recall a single episode when they did that.

Documentaries are also documentaries. Not scripted programming designed to function as a mockumentary. You're blurring the lines.

Phil in Absentia
06-08-2011, 12:09 PM
But custom in a documentary IS to look into the camera. The show is doing a mock documentary of an office situation. So it isn't taboo then.

Sure is, because it's still a scripted show, and not an actual documentary. They are intentionally trying to break the rules to break that taboo, but until it picks up and more shows do it, it will still remain taboo.

Watch the blooper reel for any scripted show that films children and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. The directors and producers are constantly screaming at them not to look at the camera.

Pete
06-08-2011, 12:15 PM
It's a spoof documentary.

Phil in Absentia
06-08-2011, 12:16 PM
Yes, which makes it a scripted show still, hence the taboo.

Show sucks, anyway. I tried watching it for like the fourth or fifth time again the other night and nearly fell asleep.

I've seen a few episodes that I chuckled at parts of, but for the most part I just don't like it.

NYRangers92
06-08-2011, 12:16 PM
So they broke the fourth wall, big deal. Ferris Bueller did it, Parks and Rec does it. Its not taboo if its expected in the genre.

Pete
06-08-2011, 12:19 PM
Phil, you're not getting the point. It's scripted, but the premise of the show is that it's a documentary. Does it really matter that it's not a real documentary? It's a comedy spoof.

I mean, I don't like it either. But the whole talking to the camera thing...You're getting weird about it. LOL.

Yes, because mocking it as it may be, it's still a scripted show, and the unwritten law of scripted television is not to look at the camera.

First off, curbed isn't that funny. And even if you think that it is, the humor certainly isn't clever. It's Seinfeld, 30 years in the future. It's a re-make.

Name a show that's consistently funnier than curb, or as intelligent in the humor? You can't, because one doesn't exist.

Seinfeld, and dare I say The Simpsons.

Seinfeld and the Simpsons are the only other shows in it's league. Seinfeld and curb are essentially the same show, but curb has no barriers. It's clever, it's hysterical, it's racy, it's everything on could want.

So is Family Guy.

Family guy is one of the most overrated shows ever. It's funny, at times, yes. But it doesn't have the same re-watch value as seinfeld. Family guy epis from 5 years ago arent as funny as Seinfeld or Simpsons episodes from 1994.

I beg to differ, but to each his own.

Either way, Curbed is no where near the G.O.A.T. Isn't even close.

It would have to be universally accepted, at least, as "humorous" for that to be the case, and most people I know don't even think it's remotely funny...

Really? I don't know anyone who's sat and watched an episode who didn't say it was "brilliant" or "hysterical"

Same. Anyone who doesn't find it hilarious or at least funny and ridiculous is suspect. I haven't met such a person yet. It is very close to the GOAT.

Family guy got some huge laughs out of me, but I was 17 and high as fuck. Now I watch it and I shake my head and have a couple laughs here or there...it does get old. It isn't half the show Curb is.

Guess me and all my friends and come workers are "suspect".

Or...just follow me for a minute...we just think that a show that copies directly from another show by the same creator is just lame and not very entertaining.

Either way, not even close to GOAT.

The Emmy®- and Golden Globe-winning comedy series CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, starring Larry David, will return to HBO for its ninth season, it was announced today by Casey Bloys, president, HBO programming. Details of the new season will be announced as they are confirmed.

“We’re thrilled that Larry has decided to do a new season of CURB and can’t wait to see what he has planned,” said Bloys.

Asked why he decided to come back, David said, “In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, ‘I left, I did nothing, I returned.’”

Can't wait for more CYE. The fact that he writes it when he feels like it, and has no obligation to push out season after season is why I think the shows quality didn't decline and won't for the new season.

HBO hackers leak episodes from upcoming season of 'Curb' (https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2017/08/13/hbo-hackers-curb-insecure/563414001/)

I'd rather wait to watch it, but yeah, some big name shows being leaked.
